POST 40 MID YEAR RECAP

Many thanks goes out to the members that have performed maintenance needs, worked the yard sales, worked the BBQ plate sales, and all other events. Without your volunteering this would be impossible

THE CLUBROOM IS OPENED

The clubroom is open Wednesday, Thursday and Friday with the hours 2:30 pm – 5:30 pm. We are still looking for volunteers for Monday and Tuesday. Anyone interested in volunteering to bartender, contact Commander Sobulefsky.

INSTALLATION OF POST OFFICERS CONDUCTED

Installation of 2022/2023 Post officers was conducted on June 7, 2022 for the coming year are:

Commander: Maureen Sobulefsky - cell phone (203)218-7214 – email - maureensobulefsky@gmail.com

1 st. Vice Commander: Laurie Buckhout

2 nd. Vice: Anita Mason

Finance Officer: Martin Summann

Adjutant: George Lawrence - cell phone - (732)310-5469 – email – retiredpm08869@gmail.com

Service Officer: Annette James

Chaplain: Roscoe Poole

Judge Advocate: Tony Shaffer

Historian: Bob Oliveria

Sgt.-At-Arms: Jerry Rahal and Calvin Capehard

Your support of Post 40 and its officers is needed. The officers cannot do it all. To make Post 40 all it can takes all doing what they are able and willing to do. Now is the time to start thinking about standing for office. Ask questions of current officers to get an understanding of what’s needed. New blood and ideas are needed.

BINGO

Bingo is played every Monday night. (NO SMOKING ALLOWED). There is a dire need for more volunteers to help. Training is free. Martin Summann is chair. Anyone wishing to volunteer to work Bingo should contact Martin.

BBQ FUNDRAISERS

Post 40 conducts 2 BBQ plate fundraisers. 1 in the spring and 1 early November. Success requires that tickets be sold in advance. That has been a problem. We planned on 1000 plates but only sold 670. Plate sales are down from previous years. This as with all events, support our post and community. Besides ticket sellers, there is a need for kitchen help, preparation and distribution. The BBQ chicken cook team can use assistance from those that love to BBQ. You are going to eat somewhere, why not support your Post 40 twice a year.

CONCESSION TRAILER

The concession trailer events include, July 4th, County Fair, River Sound Homeowners Association, Boogie on Broad and other events. As always, volunteers are needed to support these functions.

CHOWAN COUNTY REGIONAL FAIR

Chowan County Regional Fair will be September 26– September 30. The CCRF Board and many volunteers have planned an amazing “RETURN OF FAMILY FUN AT THE CHOWAN COUNTY REGIONAL FAIR”. This is the 77th annual CCRF, an amazing accomplishment for a totally volunteer effort. Opening night, Tuesday will be CAR LOAD SPECIAL. $60/CAR WITH UP TO 6 people.   K-12TH grade admitted for ½ price gate admission. Thursday, senior (60 & over) are admitted free (rides not included). Saturday we show our appreciation for active duty military members. In cooperation with Dreamland Amusements, active duty members and their dependents are admitted for ½ price at the gate and for their ride wrist bands. Now is the time to make preparations to show off your skills by preparing your exhibits for entry. You can win $$$$$ and ribbons, and yes, volunteers are always needed. Two special needs are people to help with parking and for one or two to stand fire watch from 11 PM to 7 AM. Get your CCRF book or go to www.chowanfair.com to get all details.

CHOWAN COUNTY SERVICE OFFICER

The Chowan County Service Officer is Wayne Bray. His office hours (Edenton) Tuesday 8:30 – 4:30; Wednesday 8:00 – 5:00 and Thursday 8:30 – 12:30 PM. His email is: wayne.bray@chowan.nc.gov, Office phone: 252-482-1033, cell: 252-301-4964.

MEMBERSHIP

As of December 31, 2022 only 66% of our members have renewed their dues. Letters have been sent to the 34% who have not paid. Renewing membership is important not only to our local post, but to the American Legion as a whole. Through membership the GI Bill of Rights was passed and the American Legion has been instrumental to all upgrades to the original bill and most recently The PAC ACT which extended eligibility and healthcare for Veterans with toxic exposure and Veterans of the Viet Nam era, Gulf War era and Post 911 era.

POST 40 MEETINGS

Post 40 meetings are the 1st. Tuesday of the month at 6:30 PM. Members are encouraged to attend and let your voice be heard. Ideas are the life blood of any organization. And, all members are welcome to attend the Post 40 Executive Committee meeting on the last Tuesday of the month at 6:30 PM. Note: There is a drawing after each regular membership meeting and if the member is present, they win the pot. The pot is generated by each member present donating a dollar. If no winner the pot rolls over to the next meeting.

VETERAN SERVICES

Post 40 continues to collect for The American Legion Volunteer Services at Hampton VA Hospital. Post 40 maintains a separate accounting for funds donated for Veterans Services. This fund is used for local veterans in need and to purchase personal items to take to Hampton, VA. Your donations to this worthy cause is appreciated.
